Frequently asked questions

You probably have a few questions about how you can recharge your electric vehicle at home. Hopefully, we should be able to answer them here.

Why do I need off-street parking?

Your charge point will need to be installed near to the existing cables that bring electricity into your house. And cables (and electricity) going across public footways could be potentially dangerous.

Why can’t I plug my car into any plug at home?

You can. But you run the risk of overloading your circuits, and causing long term damage to your wiring and sockets.

Do I have to have an EDF Energy electrician to install my charge point?

No you don’t. However, the technology (and process) of recharging electric vehicles is still relatively new. Very few people, outside of those involved in the research and development of the product, know enough to be able to install your charge point safely.

Our electricians are aware of all the latest developments with our recharging system, and trained to the highest standards, to make your installation as hassle-free and safe as possible.

Is my house suitable for a charge point?

Please complete our questionnaire, you’ll very quickly find out whether you can have a charge point installed at home.

What if I don’t own my home?

If your home is rented, a listed building, in a conservation area or subject to any other restrictions, then you’ll need to provide a letter of permission from your local authority, landlord or relevant organisation before we can come and check whether you can have a charge point installed.

Can I charge my car on the road as well?

Yes. The number of public, on-street charging facilities in the UK is growing every year. Get in touch with your local authority for a list of public charging points close to where you live.

Why does EcoRecharge cost £799?

EDF Energy's EcoRecharge product is a full package – not just the charge point. It includes a lockable charge point with an easy plug-in connector, a dedicated circuit, an integrated cable, a three-year warranty and installation by EDF Energy’s approved electricians, as well as support from our Green Energy Team.

Is my £50 deposit refundable?

Your £50 deposit is used to cover the costs of the survey which is then deducted from your final statement once EcoRecharge has been installed.

Why do I need to switch to EDF Energy for my Electricity supply?

The EcoRecharge package includes a component that allows us to monitor how you’re using your vehicle. We can then send you an electric vehicle statement giving details of you car's electricity usage, amount spent and your carbon emissions compared to a petrol car. We can’t do any of that if we don’t supply your electricity.

Do I need to contact my existing supplier to switch to EDF Energy?

No, don’t worry, we’ll notify them of your request to change supplier.

Can I switch both my Electricity and Gas to EDF Energy?

Of course. And if you do so you’ll be eligible for a duel fuel discount.

If the Eco20:20 tariff does not suit my needs, can I choose another tariff from the EDF Energy range?

EDF Energy will be happy to advise on the best tariff to suit your needs.

How long does it take to fully charge my car?

Depending on how you charge your car will depend on the recharging time. EcoRecharge could charge your car up to 35% faster compared to a standard 10amp charge.

Will the installation of EcoRecharge and associated cables cause much damage or mess to my house?

We will always minimise disruption to the fabric of your home and we’ll make every reasonable effort to ‘make good’ on all works we complete but cannot undertake any decoration to return the property to its previous state.

Do I have to unplug the charge point when my electric vehicle is fully charged?

No. Once your car is fully charged, the charge point discontinues charging automatically.

If I have a problem with my charge point once it is installed who do I contact?

Please contact our Green Energy Team 0800 096 9636.

Will my electric car charging show separately on my bill?

No, your consumption will just show as part of your main bill.

How do I know how much electricity my electric vehicle has used against my domestic consumption?

An electric vehicle smart meter is provided with your EcoRecharge package. This provides accurate electric vehicle only charging information which EDF Energy provides to you in a monthly statement.

What happens if I move house?

Each installation is unique. Therefore, if you are thinking of moving and have an EcoRecharge system installed, please call our Green Energy Team on 0800 096 9636.
