Children attending a hospice in Luton are to benefit from a fund-raising event which has been held on the Suffolk/Essex border.
EDF Energy employees raised £8,650 on Friday (July 23), at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club by hosting a fund-raising day which included golf and fishing competitions. It attracted 132 participants including staff, colleagues in the industry, friends and family plus teams from the event sponsors.
All proceeds will go towards Keech Hospice Care’s children’s services in Luton which supports children from across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Milton Keynes. Every year it costs more than £3million to run the children’s hospice, with only a quarter of that money coming from statutory sources and the energy workers have helped by hosting fund-raising events for three years running.
Paul Sutherland from Keech Hospice Care said: “Friday’s event takes the total raised for the hospice by EDF Energy Networks staff in Stevenage, to £22,000. The commitment that they have shown towards our children’s services is amazing, and not just a one off.
“They have all worked incredibly hard to raise as much money as possible for us, and this all paid off with a superb day and a wonderful amount raised. Thank you on behalf of all of our children and their families.”
The event was organised by 10 EDF Energy Networks employees from the Stevenage area who gave their time as part of the company’s Helping Hands scheme. This allows every member of staff at least two days’ company time a year to support local community and environmental projects.
EDF Energy Networks project manager David Trevallion, one of the organisers, said: “Last year’s event raised £7,790 for the hospice so we are delighted to top that and raise another significant amount this year. The day was very well attended and the competitions hotly contested so we saw some great sportsmanship all for a good cause.”
The organisers thanked all the companies and individuals which sponsored the day and gave prizes, with special gratitude going to Club La Costa, Coca-Cola Enterprises, and the venue for their help.

Notes to editors: EDF Energy
EDF Energy is one of the UK’s largest energy companies, producing around a fifth of the nation's electricity from its nuclear, coal and gas power stations, as well as combined heat and power plants and wind farms. The company provides power to a quarter of the UK’s population via its electricity distribution networks and supplies gas and electricity to more than 5.5 million business and residential customers. It is the number one supplier of electricity to major business in the UK.
EDF Energy’s safe and secure operation of its eight existing nuclear power stations at sites across the country makes it the UK’s largest generator of low carbon electricity. EDF Energy is also leading the UK's nuclear renaissance and has published plans to build four new nuclear reactors, subject to the right investment framework. These new plants would generate enough low carbon electricity for about 40% of Britain’s homes. They would make an important contribution to the UK’s future needs for clean, secure and affordable energy. The project is already creating business and job opportunities for British companies and workers.
Through Our Climate and Social Commitments EDF Energy has launched the biggest environmental and social programme of any UK energy company. EDF is the official energy utilities partner and sustainability partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The company is also helping its customers and others use energy more sustainably through products and initiatives such as Read, Reduce, Reward and Team Green Britain.
EDF Energy is part of EDF Group, one of Europe’s largest power companies. Following the integration with British Energy in 2009, the company employs nearly 20,000 people at locations across the UK.
Notes to editors: Keech Hospice Care
Keech Hospice Care is the new name for Keech Cottage Children’s Hospice, which cares for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes. Keech Hospice Care replaces the charity’s umbrella name, ‘The Pasque Charity’, which operates both the children’s hospice and an adult hospice service for Luton and South Bedfordshire on the same site.
The children cared for by Keech have been diagnosed with a life-limiting condition and most are expected to die in childhood. Many have progressive, degenerative conditions and their health deteriorates slowly over many years.
Care is available either in the charity’s bright and comfortable hospice near Luton, or if requested, in the family home by a children’s community nurse.
