EDF Energy staff at Sizewell B power station have thrown their support behind local businesses at a farmers’ market held at the site as part of Team Green Britain.

In a week of green activities, staff enjoyed an array of locally-grown produce as businesses set up their stalls in the canteen at Sizewell B yesterday (23 June). Some staff have also been swapping cars for bikes to travel to and from work for Team Green Britain Bike Week (18 to 26 June).

Munchy Seeds of Eastlands Road in Leiston, Purely Pesto of Eastlands Industrial Estate in Leiston, Simply Delicious from the High Street in Leiston and Elmwood Nurseries in Knodishall were just some of the local suppliers at the event.

Niki Spatchett, Community Liaison Officer, said: ”At EDF Energy we are passionate about sustainability. Our sustainability commitments set out our future and are at the heart of our business. Investment in our communities is an integral part of our business and today’s event has been a fantastic way to enable our staff to meet with local suppliers who are right on our doorstep.”

After choosing their locally grown produce to take home for their tea, Sizewell B employees eagerly tucked into the Suffolk-based menu in the staff canteen.

Crispin Clay from Munchy Seeds in Leiston said: ”We are thrilled to be invited back following last year’s successful event. This is a great opportunity for a small local producer to come and introduce ourselves to the EDF Energy community and let them know what we do.”

2011 is the second year in which Team Green Britain and Bike Week have come together to encourage Britons to reduce their carbon footprint and promote low carbon transport solutions to a wider audience than ever before. Founded by EDF Energy, Britain’s largest producer of low carbon electricity, Team Green Britain is a movement that aims to enable people to live in a more sustainable way before the Olympic and Paralympic Games arrive.

EDF Energy

EDF Energy is one of the UK’s largest energy companies and the largest producer of low-carbon electricity, producing around one-sixth of the nation's electricity from its nuclear power stations, wind farms, coal and gas power stations and combined heat and power plants. The company supplies gas and electricity to more than 5.5 million business and residential customer accounts and is the biggest supplier of electricity by volume in Great Britain.

EDF Energy’s safe and secure operation of its eight existing nuclear power stations at sites across the country makes it the UK’s largest generator of low carbon electricity. EDF Energy is also leading the UK's nuclear renaissance and has published plans to build four new nuclear plants, subject to the right investment framework. These new plants could generate enough low carbon electricity for about 40% of Britain’s homes. They would make an important contribution to the UK’s future needs for clean, secure and affordable energy. The project is already creating business and job opportunities for British companies and workers.

In its nuclear activities EDF Energy has partnered with Centrica, which has a 20% stake in the company’s eight existing plants and in the project carrying out pre-development work for new build. Centrica also has the option to take up to 20% stakes in each of the four planned plants.

Through Our Sustainability Commitments, EDF Energy has launched one of the biggest environmental and social programmes of any British energy company and the company has since been awarded the highest ranking of Platinum Plus in Business in the Community’s 2011 Corporate Responsibility Index, the UK’s leading voluntary benchmark of corporate responsibility.
