Dungeness B power station is planning to open its door once again – to hold a second Apprentice Information Day.

Date:               Saturday, 4 February
Time:               9am to 4pm
Venue:            Dungeness B power station

EDF Energy is currently seeking nearly 70 recruits nationally to join its highly successful advanced nuclear apprenticeship scheme in 2012.

Dungeness B power station staff staged an initial Apprentice Information Day at the power station in November 2011 – which attracted over 80 potential recruits.

One visitor, Gemma James (20) from Rye, said: “We wanted to see what opportunities were available. We’re very impressed.”

A sentiment echoed by her friend, 22-year-old Grace McLachlan from Hastings, who said: “We find what Dungeness B is offering very interesting and are definitely going to apply.”

The Apprentice Information Day at Dungeness B power station on Saturday, 4 February, will provide invaluable information for anyone considering a career in engineering, including full details of the apprenticeship scheme such as information about studying at HMS Sultan in Portsmouth for the first two years to what qualifications are needed and how to apply.

Dungeness B station director Martin Pearson said: “This apprenticeship scheme offers a real alternative to going to university.  Our scheme is very highly regarded and the sky really is the limit for those who join in this way, as several members of EDF Energy’s Nuclear Generation executive team started with the company as apprentices. So this could be the start of a truly amazing engineering career.”

Current Dungeness B apprentices have been out and about spreading the word about their role, visiting schools, careers fairs and, of course, being present at the previous Apprentice Information Day.

They will also be on hand to discuss the scheme with those attending this Apprentice Information Day.

“We had a really good response to the last Apprentice Open Day and received a lot of positive feedback from those that attended. Getting the current apprentices to be there to meet and talk to potential recruits was particularly well received. It was really worthwhile, as the visitors could talk through practical issues with people of their own age,” said organiser Jim French, who is Apprentice Coordinator at Dungeness B.

“We decided to build on this success by holding a second Apprentice Open Day. We are particularly keen to attract more female applicants to this event, and to the scheme, as they are under-represented in engineering.”

If you would like to come along to the information day, please call Karen Bunney on 01797 343436.

EDF Energy

EDF Energy is one of the UK’s largest energy companies and the largest producer of low-carbon electricity, producing around one-sixth of the nation's electricity from its nuclear power stations, wind farms, coal and gas power stations and combined heat and power plants. The company supplies gas and electricity to more than 5.5 million business and residential customer accounts and is the biggest supplier of electricity by volume in Great Britain.

EDF Energy’s safe and secure operation of its eight existing nuclear power stations at sites across the country makes it the UK’s largest generator of low carbon electricity. EDF Energy is also leading the UK's nuclear renaissance and has published plans to build four new nuclear plants, subject to the right investment framework. These new plants could generate enough low carbon electricity for about 40% of Britain’s homes. They would make an important contribution to the UK’s future needs for clean, secure and affordable energy. The project is already creating business and job opportunities for British companies and workers.

In its nuclear activities EDF Energy has partnered with Centrica, which has a 20% stake in the company’s eight existing plants and in the project carrying out pre-development work for new build. Centrica also has the option to take up to 20% stakes in each of the four planned plants.

Through Our Sustainability Commitments, EDF Energy has launched one of the biggest environmental and social programmes of any British energy company and the company has since been awarded the highest ranking of Platinum Plus in Business in the Community’s 2011 Corporate Responsibility Index, the UK’s leading voluntary benchmark of corporate responsibility.

EDF is the official electricity supplier and a sustainability partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The company is also helping its customers and others use energy more sustainably through products and initiatives such as Team Green Britain, smart meters and electric vehicle research.

EDF Energy is part of EDF Group, one of Europe’s largest power companies. The company employs around 15,000people at locations across the UK.
