EDF Energy Networks staff meet EACH community fundraiser Mark Fox, play specialist Lyn Haward and youngsters Megan Rea and Lydia Wombwell who were attending a ‘siblings day’ at the hospice.

20 August 2010

Energy company employees who stepped up to the mark to raise much-needed funds for the Treehouse Appeal have met some of the staff and family members at the heart of the hospice they collected cash for.

Fifteen staff from EDF Energy Networks, based at Fore Hamlet in Ipswich, hiked 12 miles as part of the Orwell Walk in June to raise about £1,000 for the appeal, which has recently hit the £1million mark.

Some of the team from EDF Energy Networks this week visited the current hospice in Walker Close, Ipswich, to meet those who will be involved with the new hospice to present them with the money raised.

Glen Pearce, communications executive at EDF Energy Networks organised the team which took part.

He said: “It has been a fantastic opportunity to come and visit the organisation that we actually raised the money for. Everyone really enjoyed taking part in the walk and by having a group of us we were able to encourage one another when things got a bit tough.”

“EDF Energy Networks has a strong ethos to support the community in which it is based. The new hospice is not far from our offices in Fore Hamlet and it is such an important appeal. We are proud to be able to raise money for it.”

The appeal has been set up to raise £3million to build a bigger hospice in Ipswich to help improve the lives of children with life-threatening conditions and complex healthcare needs, as well as providing overnight accommodation for their families.

Mark Fox, community fundraiser for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices said: “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone involved who went above and beyond their daily routine to raise money for the Treehouse Appeal.

“It was quite hard for some of them but they pushed through. To raise £1,000 is a huge amount of money for a small group. We have now hit the £1million mark and it is through donations like this that we have managed to do it.”

Notes to editors:

EDF Energy is one of the UK’s largest energy companies, producing around a fifth of the nation’s electricity from its nuclear, coal and gas power stations, as well as combined heat and power plants and wind farms. The company provides power to a quarter of the UK’s population via its electricity distribution networks and supplies gas and electricity to more than 5.5 million business and residential customers. It is the number one supplier of electricity to major business in the UK.

EDF Energy’s safe and secure operation of its eight existing nuclear power stations at sites across the country makes it the UK’s largest generator of low carbon electricity. EDF Energy is also leading the UK’s nuclear renaissance and has published plans to build four new nuclear reactors, subject to the right investment framework. These new plants would generate enough low carbon electricity for about 40% of Britain’s homes. They would make an important contribution to the UK’s future needs for clean, secure and affordable energy. The project is already creating business and job opportunities for British companies and workers.

Through Our Climate and Social Commitments EDF Energy has launched the biggest environmental and social programme of any UK energy company. EDF is the official energy utilities partner and sustainability partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The company is also helping its customers and others use energy more sustainably through products and initiatives such as Read, Reduce, Reward and Team Green Britain.

EDF Energy is part of EDF Group, one of Europe’s largest power companies. Following the integration with British Energy in 2009, the company employs nearly 20,000 people at locations across the UK.
