One of the best ways you can help prevent climate change is to reduce the amount of energy used in your home. However, we have to face the fact that, at the moment, it is difficult to completely eradicate our reliance on gas and electricity. That's why we've launched Climate Balance, to help offset the impact of the CO2 emissions connected with the supply of gas and electricity to your household. Every person who signs up is making a difference, together we can help fight climate change.
When you sign up, we'll transfer you to our Climate Balance tariff. It only costs the typical household £44* a year extra - that’s 0.147p per unit (kWh) of gas and 0.42p per unit (kWh) of electricity (including VAT). This additional money will be used to help support a wide range of sustainable projects around the world, which are designed to help balance the CO2 emissions associated with the gas and electricity supplied to Climate Balance customers.
Your contribution will help fund projects that aim to deliver sustainable differences to the environment and have wider benefits to the local communities. There are two types of projects.
1. Energy efficiency - which reduces the amount of fuel needed and thereby the CO2 emissions produced. For instance promoting the use of efficient cooking stoves in Bangladesh.
2. Reforestation projects - Trees will be planted throughout the UK to help offset CO2 emissions. Projects will also be undertaken abroad. For example restoring rain forests in south-western Uganda, which not only reduces the impact of CO2 emissions, but provides employment for local communities as well as a sustainable timber resource.
