How Climate Balance for Business works*
The electricity you use every day has an impact on the amount of harmful gases known as Carbon Dioxide (CO2) that is released into the atmosphere. CO2 is believed to be one of the main contributor gases of Climate Change that we face today.
Climate Balance for Business allows you to help balance your business' energy emissions by helping to contribute to a wide range of sustainable energy projects. To sign up to our Climate Balance for Business Scheme, you only have to pay an extra contribution of 0.40p (excl VAT) per unit of electricity, on top of the standard unit price. We will then use these contributions to help fund suitable environmental projects.
Once you have signed up to Climate Balance for Business, you can rest assured you will be helping reduce the disastrous effects of Climate Change. The money generated from Climate Balance for Business will be used to fund global and local projects which deliver sustainable differences to the environment and have wider benefits to the local communities. There are two types of project:
- Energy efficiency - which reduces the amount of fuel needed and thereby the CO2 emissions produced. For instance, promoting the use of efficient cooking stoves in Bangladesh.
- Reforestation projects - trees will be planted throughout the UK to offset CO2 emissions. Projects will also be undertaken abroad. For example, restoring rainforests in south-western Uganda, which not only helps to reduce the impact of CO2 emissions, but provides employment for local communities as well as a sustainable timber future.
* Participation in our Climate Balance scheme is strictly subject to you switching to our Climate Balance tariff and agreeing to our Climate Balance qualifying conditions (copies of which are available on request by contacting 0800 904 7458 †. The Climate Balance tariff unit rate is slightly higher than our standard rates - 0.40p per kWh (excl VAT) extra for electricity. These additional amounts will be paid into a Climate Balance fund. CO2 emissions will be balanced on an aggregate basis for all Climate Balance customers through projects funded by this central fund. EDF Energy will invest in projects designed to balance the C02 emissions associated with each kWh of electricity supplied to Climate Balance customers based on the following conversion factors:- 0.527kg per kWh of electricity supplied. The required level of CO2 reductions will be achieved over the lifetime of these projects, which may differ from project to project.
