The 2011 Graduate Scheme is now closed. The 2012 Graduate Scheme will open for applications in the Autumn.
How can we develop a sustainable energy future for the UK? It’s a big question, and one that you will help us answer. During your career as an Energy Analyst, you’ll build a clear insight into the factors that make our business successful. You’ll learn how we operate in the market, how we control risks and how we’ll develop an increasingly broad power portfolio. And of course, you’ll be on the front line at what is a pivotal time for the energy industry.
Who is it for?
We’re looking for graduates with a minimum of a 2:1 degree in economics, business, geography, science or engineering.
Where you fit in
Energy Sourcing and Customer Supply (ESCS), where you’ll be based, is our ‘control centre’. It’s the part of the business that manages, optimises and sells energy to the UK and Europe. We’re a major power generator and we’re spearheading the exploration of new sources of energy. The branch itself runs EDF Energy’s coal and gas fired power stations as well as combined heat and power plants and wind farms. We sell energy to major business customers within the UK, as well as to a significant chunk of the country’s population.
What will you be doing?
‘Energy Analyst’ is a broad term, covering a number of roles. Some are focused on the analytical work: looking at numbers to understand what is and will be happening. Others support large projects.
In the long term, analysts create models of the energy markets to help us predict what will happen decades from now. This helps us make the wisest decisions on investments and assets. In the medium term, analysts are essential for our hedging strategies – making sure that we buy the resources we need at the best prices. And in the short term analysts help us make good trading decisions and make sure we’re not exposing ourselves to any undue risk.
Analysts can even play a role in helping to formulate industry and government policy – as well as responding to those policies and representing EDF Energy at industry forums.
Our graduate scheme in this area runs for two years and consists of four six month rotations. We’ll also try and give you rotations outside of the ESCS to ensure you have broad exposure to the business.
Rotations are available in the following teams:
Upstream
This team looks at look at the best ways to get the most out of our power stations and other generation assets. They also control our physical fuel requirements – looking at the supply chain for coal and biomass for example. The team looks at optimisation (planning using sophisticated models to determine when and how to run our power stations to maximize profitability) and hedging (helping to reduce our exposure to volatile wholesale energy prices).
Optimisation
Optimisation is all about balancing profitability with risk. This team develops sophisticated hedging strategies to create maximum value from our assets while staying within our agreed level of risk. The team also manages the output from our nuclear portfolio and undertakes external and structured trading. Decisions here are supported by a centralised modelling group, which builds quantitative models, performs analysis on the portfolio and provides a single fundamental market view.
Business to Business (B2B)
Some of the UK’s biggest industries rely on us to provide power at prices that keep them profitable. And, quite rightly, they expect excellent customer focus and service, sensible pricing and a competitive cost base. This team is here to manage their supply of energy. Work can involve everything from marketing, sales and customer services to pricing, hedging, billing and debt collection.
Business to Consumer (B2C)
This team develops and helps deliver new ways to give a fantastic service to our residential customers. You could be working on anything – from predicting how much energy our residential customers will use to ensuring that this energy is effectively purchased, and from setting prices to managing our sales and marketing activities. You’ll also look at the ways we provide our customers with a great service – either over the phone or in their home.
Strategic Investment
The focus here is on buying or developing energy assets, with an eye on the future. You could be looking three years ahead – or forty. The scope includes gas, electricity and renewables assets, as well managing any equity stakes in other assets or the development of joint ventures. With the levels of new investment we’re involved with, you can expect to keep busy.
Transformation team
The Transformation team co-ordinates our overall operational strategy. Put more simply, the team oversees change projects within the company, whether they are to do with the integration of the combined companies or the development of the business in the future.
Where you'll be based
As a graduate Energy Analyst, you’ll be could be based in a variety of locations. This includes but is not limited to London, Hove, Gloucester, Exeter, Doxford, Bexleyheath and Crawley.
