Engineers on site

What will you do?

You’ll either be based at a nuclear power station, or at our central engineering support centre at Barnwood, Gloucestershire.
At a power station, you could expect to take on a junior hands-on role: perhaps developing your fault-finding skills; project managing minor projects; supporting safety at work; examining feasibility cases to extend stations’ lifetimes; or carrying out maintenance and installing new equipment. Because our power stations are often big local employers, you’ll find there’s a real sense of pride and a close community in each one. What’s more, this is an established scheme, so you’ll be well looked-after and given an excellent grounding.

Alternatively, at Barnwood, you could be involved in a project to support our nuclear power stations, again taking a junior role as part of a team. Because Barnwood is where our teams tackle design engineering, lifetime planning for the reactors, outages and large projects, you’ll find yourself surrounded by highly qualified professionals, taking a broader, more strategic view. In addition, there may also be the opportunity to undertake placements in Civil Engineering and Materials.

Why EDF Energy?

Quite simply, you won’t find opportunities like these anywhere else in the UK. EDF Energy is in a unique position to lead the UK’s nuclear renaissance: we’re at the forefront of new nuclear, but with the integration of British Energy, we’ve also significant experience of managing up and running plants – and of course the decommissioning process. We’re also well placed globally: our parent company, EDF Group is involved in major nuclear new builds all over the world – so the possibilities for the future are immense.

Is it for me?

We have high expectations for the students we take on: we’re looking for people who are genuinely interested in nuclear energy, and who want to take ownership of their experience on the placement. We’re eager for you to achieve a great deal – and we want to see that eagerness reflected in you, too. You don’t need to be an expert already, but you’ll have a good base understanding from your engineering or science degree.
