What does it involve?
You could take on a hands-on role at one of our power stations: perhaps developing your fault-finding skills; project managing minor projects; supporting safety at work; examining feasibility cases to extend stations’ lifetimes; or carrying out maintenance and installing new equipment. Because our power stations are often big local employers, you’ll find there’s a real sense of pride and a close community in each one. What’s more, this is an established scheme, so you’ll be well looked-after and given an excellent grounding.
Alternatively, at our Central Engineering Support Centre, you could be involved in a project to support our nuclear power stations, again taking on a role as part of a team. This is where our teams tackle design engineering, lifetime planning for the reactors, outages and large projects, so you’ll find yourself surrounded by highly qualified professionals, taking a broader, more strategic view. There may also be the chance to complete placements in Civil Engineering and Materials.
We also have an opportunity within our Design Authority Function. This area will be working on supporting the development of the HPC safety case and implementation of Design Authority procedures across our Nuclear New Build business unit.
Who is it for?
We have high expectations for the students we take on: we’re looking for people who are genuinely interested in nuclear energy, and who want to take ownership of their experience on the placement. We’re eager for you to achieve a great deal – and we want to see that eagerness reflected. You don’t need to be an expert already, but you’ll have a good base understanding from your engineering or science degree.
Where is it based?
You’ll either be based at one of our nuclear power stations, Dungeness in Kent or Hinkley Point in Somerset, or at our Central Engineering Support Centre at Barnwood in Gloucestershire. We consider candidates from all engineering, science and maths disciplines for opportunities at Barnwood and the Qube, but only those studying Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Quality or Process Engineering for roles at Hinkley Point and Dungeness.
How to Apply
We have a number of opportunities within our Nuclear Science and Engineering. When applying for this opportunity please ensure you select your current engineering or science discipline from the drop down menu provided. This will enable us to match you most closely to the relevant opportunity for your skills and area of study. Apply Now.
